Hi Paul,
I think, by 1951, the rated pilots had their choice of B-25s or C-47s to
get their time in. Possibly a few C-45s as well. I rode a C-47 flight
from Wright to Maxwell and back on one occasion. Seeing sights like
Cincinnati at night made quite an impression on me. The single-engine
guys took part in a test program to put as many hours as possible on
some early T-28s that were being evaluated on the flight line at Wright.

In the late '40s and on into the '50s, Base Flight at a number of
bases had one or more B-25s for pilots to get their reqired flying
hours with. When I was stationed at Patterson Field in '48, I caught
a ride out to California and back for Thanksgiving weekend in one.
That was a fun ride. As I remember, those engines are very loud, due
to straight stacks or something like that. Earplugs were necessary.

The USAF still had some B-25s flying when I was stationed at
Wright-Patterson in the early 50s. I can still remember the unique
"rattling" sound they made as they passed over the fence of the parking
lot.
