Hi Moose,
You have the correct approach, with the flex-brimmed hats. I can attest
to what the sun can do. I've had damage removed from the tops of both
ears, and any number of spots on my bald head. My grandson is a surgeon
who does dental surgery and facial reconstruction. He has removed a
number of "growths" for me.
Of course, you have a nice head of hair, from photos I've seen, so the
latter part may not apply to you. :-)

Aye, it’s a lot easier on the shoulder, and on my sensibilities as I
wander around looking for things besides photographs.
And, ahem, I’ll have you know the baseball cap must be on backwards
in order to take photos in the portrait perspective.
Certainly I do know, as it's the reason I gave up wearing baseball
hats and switched to hats with brims flexible enough for portrait
format shootin'. Coincidentally, most also keep the tops of my ears
from sunburn. :-)
I have no idea whether direct sun does any of the bad things some
attribute to it. I do know I don't like it in my eyes. I have never
understood the point of hats like fezzes and those brimless hats worn
in some African countries.*

NB: I don't wear this one out in the sun - but it is fun. :-)
