Thanks. I'd thought about the possibility of rotating the head but had
already put everything away and had nothing at hand to inspect to see if
it could be done. But, in the light of morning and a cup of coffee it
occurred to me that, since my latitude is only 33.6 degrees I can simply
tip the tripod itself to gain a few more degrees over the 30 degrees the
head can provide. I just tried it and found that I can get about 15
degrees tilt on the tripod by lowering one leg without getting it in
serious trouble from imbalance. I don't need that much so it should be
fine. I just need to avoid stumbling over the shortened leg which will
end up between my legs which is not normal orientation for me.
Thanks, all

I've found the same problem with a couple of my Manfrotto heads, but if you
mount the camera back to front (180 degree rotation about the screw on the

Subject: [OM] Tripod support for moon shots
It's late twilight and the moon was just hanging there inviting a shot with
the E-M1. I rounded up the Orion 500/5.6 spotting scope, a T2 to OM adapter
and an OM to 4/3 adapter and put everything on my big Manfrotto tripod with
410 geared head. Ooops! That head doesn't tilt up more than 30 degrees.
Go grab the Manfrotto 3-way head. Ooops.
Same problem... no tilt more than 30 degrees. Ball head. Naw, hard to
install and also limited in tilt angle except in one orientation.
I have two equatorial heads but one is for the 8" Celestron. No reason to
put a 500mm Orion on it and no easy way to mount it if I did. I also have a
4.5" Meade reflector with equatorial mount but there's no easy way to attach
to that either... at least in a hurry.
So, those of you who have been taking moon shots... what are you using for
support? Or do I just depend on IS to do the job. :-)
