Thanks, Chris! I agree. However, I don't necessarily buy into the current
mantra that vinyl is superior in every possible way. I'm old enough that I
have plenty of vinyl. I also remember all of the downside to vinyl that
everyone seems to romance into forgetfulness... warps, surface noise,
having to clean dust out of grooves, inner-groove distortion...
A poorly-mastered CD is ugly. But so is a poorly-mastered vinyl LP. A
properly-mastered CD has far more dynamic range and none of the physical
hazards.
One thing I do miss is full-sized album art, liner notes you can read.. and
I also miss the way an LP is sequenced. Typically you start Side One with a
hit or the strongest song. The rest of the side varies in energy, with the
last track typically quieter to reduce the inner-groove distortion. Then
you flip the record over, and there's an energy bump as you start Side Two
with another high-energy, strong song. CD's tend to front-load all the
strong songs, and put the lesser material on the rest of the disc.
However, as the mp3 single takes over and feeds the short-attention-span
generation we have coming up now, a coherent album of songs is becoming a
thing of the past.
