I have not done what I would call a formal portrait since well before I
bought my OM-Ds. I am in error. I finally pulled out my handy DoF
calculator and computed for an upper body shot at 50mm. The right size
is from about 10 feet and I would probably shoot that at f/4-4.5 to
assure back of head in focus when focused on the eyes but with far focus
very well short of the backdrop. However, neither of my native lenses
can do that. The 28-150 is at f/5.6 at 50mm and the 12-50 is at f/6.3
at 50mm... overly deep DoF. However, a head shot at 5 feet would
require very careful focusing even at f/8. And, although I haven't used
them, I do own 50mm OMZ lenses in abundant supply.

Since I apparently have no photographic skills would you care to

Background isolation and DoF control with 4/3 is a piece of cake. It's
all in the focal lengths, apertures and working distances.
I have absolutely no problem getting awesome portraits with the
50/1.4, 35-80/2.8 or 100/2. As far as E-system lenses are concerned,
the 50-200 is a golden lens as is the 50/2. I've also gone nuts with
the 200/4 and 300/4.5, but that's another story.
F2 at 50mm is all you really need. Beyond that it's just a peeing
contest.
