I eventually went to Epson Luster for the bulk of what I printed, with Moab’s
Exhibition Luster for special shots. For black and white, I used Canson Bartya
or Epson Exhibition Fiber. If I needed matte, I used Velvet Fine Art or
Ultrasmooth Fine Art.
The printer start-up issues seem to plague most Epson printers below the Stylus
Pro 3880. My old 2800 (I think) required a head cleaning every time it sat for
more than a day. All that nonsense stopped when I stepped up to a Stylus Pro
4800. Same with the 3880. Epson’s take a huge leap forward when you go Stylus
Pro. But if you don’t print very often, they’re not terribly cost effective. I
know Canon makes some very good printers. I wonder if they have similar ink
issues. Never used one, so I don’t know.
