I was paying attention to "The dead grass and the concrete are pretty much the same tone in BW, so it looks much flatter
than I would like it to." and did, I think, differentiate those elements. :-) I was also interested, as Chuck noted,
in getting the children to stand out from the background.
All that may be done in a higher key way. I've also added a little post downsampling sharpening to parts of it. I think
it adds to the separation of elements, but may still bring out more of the wall contrast/dirt than you find ideal?

C.H.'s is a fine version. A bit high key for me/my screen. More importantly, it does little to differentiate the
textural details of the grass and concrete, which I saw as part of the "assignment".
