I hate that... I just got some gear to mess around with the Atmel
MCS-51 series (I'm in for under thirty AUD - includes a programmer, some
minimum system breakout boards and a board with some LEDs and a serial
port). I wrote a short assembly language program to flash/blink/cycle
the board's LEDs. I had to dig deep and RTFM to get it working - it's
been almost 20 years!. The integrated development tools are amazing - so
easy compared to the old days!
I'm hoping to spark some interest in #1 son (software engineer) with
this stuff! embedded systems may give him some more latitude to find
work locally.
