I agree the original problem is the anti-virus which is acting as a "man in the
middle" and intercepting all your web
traffic. Avast will do the same thing unless you tell it to stop. You can see
what's happening in Firefox with addons
like Calomel SSL validation
If you want to get a good handle on the native Windows Firewall, look at
"windows firewall control" which has
useful profiles, a log viewer & investigator, and a nice way to configure
Windows firewall rules. I mostly use it to
restrict programs calling out. Vista + I think.
