A mystery to me too. I only used the standard one for a few days before
fitting the extended version. But, as I said, I wear the camera draped
over my extended belly so the extended eyecup has plenty of opportunity
to get rubbed off. While I don't take hikes through the mountains, by
next month it will have been there for 2 years.

Well I just received a couple new eyecups from B&H. Piggybacked them
on another order. Stuck one on the EM5 and it lasted exactly 3 trips!
No unusual or rough use at all. @ $10 a piece this really sucks.
However this time it only came loose from one side so I was able to
determine what fails. The little metal "keeper" that slides over ridge
the on the viewfinder. They appear to be stuck on with a wee bit of
glue that easily fails with a slight tug. see attached photo. I'm
going to see if I can modify the remaining one to beef it up somewhat.
Time to get out the JB Weld. A really lousy implementation of a decent
design.
A mystery to me.
