The story stretches credibility a bit but perhaps not beyond
possibility. The largest snapper is probably the alligator snapper
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator_snapping_turtle>
According to this wiki article alligator snappers weight about 35 lbs at
breeding maturity but, like many other reptiles, may continue to grow as
long as they live. There are verified claims of weights of 236 and 249
lbs and an unverified claim of 403 lbs. The other claim that stretches
credibility at least a little is that the monster was living in
Churubusco, Indiana. Wiki says their range extends to southern Indiana
but Churubusco is in northern Indiana. But if you asked me "Where does
a 500 lb alligator snapper go?" I'd say, anywhere he wants to. :-)

A Google search of "Beast of..." made for some interesting reading. I've
seen a few big Snapper here over the years (30-40 lbs.) but nothing as big
as the Busco Beast.

I just found this photograph in my archives. I shot it last summer in the
small town of Churubusco, Indiana. The turtle refers to a local legend that
a farmer near the town discovered a giant turtle living in a small lake
near
his farm!
