I think the gods were smiling on me (but not sure) I took some ram home
from work to try. first I swapped the ram over in the slots, no
difference, I had only one 8GB module form wrk so tried that, still a
problem but it was different, stripes were not so bright and there was
more flickering - I was getting 1" stripes of colour alternating between
a light green and blue across the screen and when I logged in it just
hung which is why i wasn't totally convinced it was a graphic card issue.
So then I tried two slower speed 2GB modules and it worked fine, I did
several reboots and wake from sleep operations and all was hunky dory. I
replaced the original ram and everything was now fine and dandy, even
this morning when I did a few wake from sleep tests it was ok. Its too
early to say its totally cured but at least it's useable again for now.
At least the research was helpfull and apart from the money a new
macbook might not be the end of the world but there is rumours of anti
reflective coatings and the next generation of processors on the
horizon so the longer it works the better.
