The 18-55 kit lens is marked at 18, 24, 28, 35 and 55mm. Unfortunately,
there's no 50mm marking and interpolating on a non-linear scale is
difficult. I'd suggest you mark it yourself by comparison with the 50mm
prime. Set the camera up with 50mm prime in the house on a tripod and
then focus on something like a yardstick and note the length of the
yardstick that's visible. Then install the kit lens and adjust the zoom
until you see the same view. Put a little mark on the focal length
scale. You should see the full width of the yard stick (horizontally)
at about 6.5 feet.
Taking the A200 is a wise choice. It's a camera you're very familiar
with and, most importantly, it provides a backup. You don't want to go
to the trouble and expense of visiting Yosemite only to find that your
camera has failed.

Thanks to all who responded to my message and most of all Chuck and

Now I am really confident in my new camera, but am not leaving for
California without the old, trusted friend. I hate to agree with the
Schnozz, but the A200 is a fantastic camera.
I didn't mean to make it difficult, but there aren't any tic marks on
the kit lens and I had to guess the focal length in the little time I
had for tests. Also, what caused the panic in the first place, was my
stupidity, as I did not sharpen the A200's file, before making a
judgement. I just sharpened the files from the A65 and they did not
look like anything that I am used to. I will investigate further
after we come back from vacation, why on all monitors, but mine the
pictures look soft.
Chuck, thanks again for the prime. I am sure it would come in handy
during low light situations
Once again, many thanks. Yosemite, here I come. Watch out.
Best
Boris
