So why bother getting anything newer? They'll just abandon that later on and
you'll be back to buying something newer that they'll later abandon ad nauseum.
Just a technical version of a dog chasing it's tail.
Stick with XP and get used to being a techno orphan. You'll be much better
 off in the long run.>

Unless an XP user wishes to stay off-line I am advised that there is an importan
t contrary argument.

Thus MS will no longer support XP but I am told some software routines found in
XP will survive in later versions of Windows. If MS subsequently finds vulnerab
ilities in any of these routines they will include suitable patches in updates f
or other operating systems but not XP. But, knowing XP systems will still exist
out there, malware operators may work backwards from the patch and then exploit
the weakness found on the routine whic h remains uncorrected in XP.
Are any more expect computer gurus on this list able to confirm or refute this r
isk?

I do have an operable XP system which only gets switched on when I have a proble
m with my Vista system and want the 2 systems working side by side rather than r
ushing up and downstairs to my wife's machine.

But when choosing a new system, if you finally do, I would think long and hard b
efore buying Windows 8.1 rather than Windows 7. In my bitter experience, 8.1 beh
aves like a whole new OS at first rather than an evolutionary advance.
