Yeah, well, uh, er ... Certainly better sometimes than no support.
My ancient Velbon and new-ish TrekPod both raise the camera to the same decent
eye level. The simple monopod collapses
much shorter more quickly. Without weighing them, they feel about the same
weight, TrekPod probably a smidge heavier.
But the TrekPod can also spread its legs for a better, more stable stance, at
least on moderately flatish ground.
Then there's the Leki hiking pole, with 1/4-20 thread under the knob on top to
bring the camera only about 3" lower than
the other two. It's almost infinitely lighter, and a really good pole, too.
The Manfrotto 3232 or Velbon QR ball head will fit on any of them. (Yes, a ball
head does make sense on a monopod that
plays tripod.)
