Nor should and O/S allow itself to be clobbered by software installation.
OTOH, I've installed seemingly countless Adobe products over many years, and
never had anything remotely resembling what

They are generally silly, a default option installer package making apps,
dating way back. I always ignore them, too.
Many installers, including from Adobe, politely tell me when I need to close an
open app to do an update/install.

I leave ZoneAlarm on. It informs me when the installer needs web access, and
lets me decide what to do about that.

Absolutely! It does require someone to know what they are doing and pay
attention.
