Has anybody done (or seen) a comparison between the EM-1 and EM-5 that
touches on viewfinder lag and shutter shock issues?
I love my E-M5, but two things about it drive me crazy sometimes. First,
"shutter shock" at the most commonly-used shutter speeds make it
necessary to program in a 1/8 second delay for the sharpest
pictures--this has been discussed here. Second, the viewfinder lags
enough behind reality that catching action peaks and fleeting
expressions is difficult. Note that what I'm talking about here is not
shutter lag--the shutter responds very quickly, but what you see in the
EVF is a little bit behind reality. Yes, you can learn to anticipate,
but sometimes it's not enough. The two issues combined make
decisive-moment photography problematic. Which is a pity, because the
E-M5 is so wonderful in almost every other respect. My Leica M8 gets
jealous sometimes.
So I'm wondering if the E-M1 has improved on performance in these key
areas. Most of what I've read doesn't address these issues. Most
reviewers rave about the camera being generally faster, with autofocus
in particular. The ergonomics are a decided improvement. The
already-good JPG engine is improved, according to a pro I talked to, but
the RAW image quality is about the same, perhaps with a very slight
change for the better. Some say low-light performance has improved,
some say it's a little worse, and the average is a wash.
My feeling, having handled the E-M1 in a camea store, is that the ergo
and speed improvements are very nice, tempting But unless the shutter
shock and VF lag issues are significantly improved, I will probably
stick with the E-M5 until the next iteration.
Thoughts, insights, information, or wild, friendly speculation? :-)
