I don't know why Thunderbolt drives are so pricey, but a friend of mine found a
Buffalo drive of 1Tb with USB3 and Thunderbolt ports. It cost GBP100, but
since it came with a Thunderbolt cable, pricey items from Apple, it didn't seem
to be such a bad deal.
Also, Firewire 800 is a cheaper interface when used with hard drives and you
can buy Thunderbolt to FW800 adapters to assist with the speed.
