Well, I may just be in luck... I think it's actually that the Firewire
enclosure had failed. I tried both that I have (same model, same age)
and neither of them would mount the new drive. Actually, right now
neither of them would do anything.
I pulled the original photo drive and popped it into one of those
popup-toaster SATA docks, and the upshot is I am currently backing up my
photo library to a brand-new external drive via USB. So, the original
drive may be fine. I will be researching enclosures that are reliable
but don't cost as much as a car. I'd love to have a Thunderbolt case,
but those are currently at the "stupid" level.
Copying 420GB of photos over USB2 is not the speediest option, so I will
go to bed and see what's what in the morning.
