That's wonderful news. Eyes are such vital and complex/precise organs that
anything major
going wrong is a real concern.

Re: the stuck filter - what they said ... Especially using a broad grippy
surface on the glass
that doesn't deform the perimeter of the ring and cause it to grip even more ...
I've never heard of the broccoli rubber bands trick though - should be worth a
try - although
maybe your home-grown broccoli don't come with rubber bands. (g)
