The main problem is that when you 'get a grip' on them, you deform the ring
just slightly and make it jam. So the traditional way to get a filter off a
lens was to put in nose down on a non-slip surface and turn the lens - that
evened out the pressure. Much tougher though with a step-up ring. Try turning
between the flat of your hands.
When all else fails, sacrifice the step-up ring - cut with Dremel, tear off
with pliers. Been there, done that.
Too brutal - get a 62-58mm step-down ring? :-)
