I was in the Air Force so never on a troop ship** but my dad was sent to
England around Christmas 1943 aboard the Queen Mary. For more speed to
elude U-boats the Queen had had her gyros removed which is what smooths
the ride for civilian passengers. No such luck for the troops.
**I did, however, spend 10 days on the USS Nimitz on a post-refit
shake-down cruise. But my accommodations were a two-man cabin... a lot
better than a troop ship. But even the Nimitz, big as she is, can rock
n' roll in big Pacific waves.
