I agree with most of that. I didn't think the light would have completely
blown out - I figured I could pull it down with highlights, but that turned
out to be not the case. I should have moved Jamie a bit. I wanted it
horizontal to show more context - that stage was his responsibility, his
"office", so that's why I wanted it blurred as a background. The set was
fairly tall - perhaps I could have gotten away with vertical orientation
and still gotten the context.
I started using color for Billy, but the heavy underexposure made things
get ugly when I tried to brighten it up enough. The first problem I
encountered was the banding that happens with that Panny 20/1.7 when you
try to tweak the image too far. The only way I could get something I was
comfortable with was to go B&W. I definitely need to practice doing fill
flash and balancing it with the background so it just makes the subject pop
and not look like a flash photo in a dark room.
I do agree that he should have been angled a bit, and not straight on. I'm
getting more comfortable asking for these shots - now I just need to
concentrate more on composition.
