There's a benefit?
Good advice anyway - they seem geared to sell you up aggressively. They wanted
around 100 pounds for a month or part thereof as well - I declined on the
grounds that I can read. (take your own?)
One problem in the UK is that the insurance companies really don't like
insuring anyone with a non-UK licence. In 2009, I bought a decent second hand
car for 700 pounds and spent another couple of hundred getting it into good
shape and then found myself being quoted a 1200 pound premium for one year
because i had an Australian licence. Ludicrous. I couldn't get 3 months cover -
it was one month or 12 and cancel after three with a penalty.
The next time I went, the car was in my son's name, I have a UK licence as well
and getting myself added to his policy for a month cost about 25 pounds!
I'd suggest renting with NO extras at the counter but go see a broker in the US
before you leave and investigate travel insurance that would cover the rental
collision excess up to around $2000.
