That and god knows what else. He was deaf, a botanist, fluent in gaelic,
passionate about Irish literature and history, and for some odd reason chose to
spend some of his disposable time editing books by Jane Austen. He added the
"a" in MacCarthy because he said it was supposed to be there. I think all other
McCarthy's eschew the "a".
Would love to have known him.
