I sometimes think the university math requirements for some fields are
just silly. One does not need to know how to design and/or build a
wrench in order to use it. IMHO, the situation I encountered with
wanting to know the application of determinants and being rebuffed by
the prof (who obviously didn't know) I see as similar to being taught to
design and build a wrench without ever knowing what it's used for. :-)
