For goofing around, take an image which has been resized to around
1600 pixels wide, so it fits comfortably on your screen. Start with an
USM of 40 pixels and 18%. Start go up and down in size by 50%
increments. You'll clearly seen the results. To get a quick judge on
things, use a much higher percentage setting. Once you like what you
see, translate the pixel width settings to a number that would be
correct for the full-size image.
(If you own a flamethrower computer, you might be able to do with
without too much bother on your 250 Gazillion pixel files).
Probably a good rule of thumb is to adjust to the point where you can
see the effect then back off by half. Somewhere between 8% and 18% is
where you'll end up.
