ARGH! I meant to type 50/1.4. The 50/1.8 is OK, but not nearly as nice.

It's easy to test. Do an indoor shoot where you place some interior
lights, like a chandelier, in the thirds, or just off center. See if
you get the phantom lights showing up on the opposite side of the
image.
