Reliability aside, they are quite compact and lightweight and the lenses are
quite good. I considered one until I was warned about the reparability.

I suspect Chuck was thinking of the Mamiya Six (not least because I was,
too). Mamiya 6 is a very different beast, and I have seen and handled it's
brother Mamiya 7. Lightweight, modern, easier to hold than a Texas Leica -
and desirable!

I can't help you with your issues with film, but I think you misunderstand
the Mamiya 6. It makes the typical DSLR seem whale-like.
Personally, I like the Mamiya 7, but that's a personal problem.
