Much as I would like a great monitor, I think a new desktop comes first. My
Samsung 226BW has profiled up nicely, I just
have to be careful of the viewing angle, which is pretty easy sitting at a desk.
So, of course, it started acting up, dark when first on, then flickering until
warmed up. And it kept getting worse.
Being just a bit creatively indolent, I'm content to turn the computer on, go
do other stuff, and come back later. But I
figured if it was getting worse, it would probably fail altogether eventually.
So it's off the the wild world of internet geeks, bless them, to search
'Samsung 226BW flicker'. Turns out is is a
notorious problem with this huge selling model, which is one reason I'm posting
about it here. Likely more than one of
us has one.
Several technically awful, but highly informative, YouTube videos later, I knew
exactly what was likely wrong and how to
disassemble it without trial and error. Disassemble (easy), confirm and remove
puffed up capacitors, (and the others of
the same brand and type), remove, trip to the electronics store*, replace,
reassemble, and all is as it should be again.
I also re-calibrated, but see no obvious difference.
I Can See Again Moose
* We are so lucky here. The old fashioned electronics store started by the
sainted Al Lasher ("Flasher's, in the old
days) is still being run by his now gray haired children. A truly amazing
hodge-podge of electronics trivia, ephemera,
old and rare, along with a huge selection of current parts, tools, etc.

What if the Hokey Pokey *IS* what it's all about?
