I called it matrix, but the exif calls it multi-segment. At any rate, this is
straight metering, No compensation at all. Not to say I haven't done some post
in Lightroom, but it's essentially as metered by the camera. I read somewhere
that some wag thought Nikon had really screwed up with the D800 matrix, but
that hasn't been my experience. I'm awed by what it seems capable of. There are
other shots with wide Dynamic Range that the meter doesn't seem to breath hard
while handling. Again, post is necessary for tweaking, but the essential
exposure is there. I think I recall reading in Thom Hogan's review of the D800
that it's capable of a little more than 11 stops of dynamic range at base ISO
of 100.
