Ahhhh, while this is off-topic (something that really doesn't happen too
much here), it certainly is a topic many of us, how should I say this,
old-timers do relate to.

Alas one's personal history will skew the discussion. In my case I found
the Corvair Corsa soft-top (rear, aircooled motor, really smooth 4-speed,
terrific handling (Ralph Nader to the contrary), to be just wonderful. If
I could find one and keep it running (all thumbs, and no coordination, I'm
afraid), I would get it. Although I must admit, my COO would surely put
in a veto; she's seen me try other self-help projects.

But I also have to react to Brian's mention of the Jag Mk VII straight-six
howl. I needed a car at University, and amazingly my dad found an
11-year-old Jag XK120 fixed-head-coupe in good condition (never mind the
magnesium wire wheels and 100K miles with some racing time on it.) I have
no idea what he was thinking. It was cheap though which surely entered
into the decision. He knew as little of automobiles as I did, so we got
it in sublime ignorance.

But I know that I loved it even though I couldn't command the intracies of
the quad carborators and other minor details of the big straight six. I do
know that Brian's memory of the roar of the engine is right on, and when
connected to the "good" judgment of a 22 year old driver, that car came
pretty close to killing me on several occasions. I also know the
experience of trying to keep it running pretty much burned
out the ambitions of having other sports cars, hence the appeal of the
Corvair Corsa mentioned above.
