The ship I served on in the US Coast Guard was a converted Pacific theater
sub/seaplane tender that the navy had sold to
the CG for $1. Not long after my stint, the CG sold it back and the Navy sank
it for target practice.
My memories of it were not particularly fond, and I shed no tears. It seemed a
fitting end to a long career. I have an
old friend who is a historian by nature and training (Rhodes Scholar, PhD
thesis published) who likes to relieve the
past. Fortunately, the ship on which he served is now a museum piece, and he
enjoyed visiting it recently.
The USCG is a MUCH different outfit now.
