Chuck:
IIRC, the IS modes relate to orientation of movement (all axis,
horizontal, vertical). The half release only switches the particular mode of IS
on (if it's "on", of course) and fires up the AF. This IS effect is easily
noted with MF focussing.
I would presume that if IS is "off", then the half release will not turn it
back on.

Subject: [OM] Image stabilizer confusion, was: E-M5 battery life...
You just complicated my already confused view of the stabilizer. After reading
Moose's post:
"Yeah, I remember that. There was a setting to turn it off between shots. When
I heard about Chuck's battery trouble, I couldn't find it. I guess the option
to leave it on all the time went away."
I decided to check my firmware level. It's the latest (V 1.5 on the
camera) and the camera's menus (at least for stabilization) seem to agree with
the PDF user's guide. But the only stabilizer options I've found there are:
A) Turn it off or turn it on with settings 1, 2 or 3.
B) Set it such that the stabilizer turns on with a shutter half press
The problem is that I can't determine how these two modes are related.
If I set option A to off and option B to on does the stabilizer then turn on
only when I half press the shutter? If I set option A to on (in any of the 3
modes) what is the meaning of option B? If B is off does it negate A?
