I hope you're all aware of the current (and continuing) Java security
hole. If not, Google: java security bug firefox
This problem is not specific to Firefox but I included Firefox in the
search terms since I know the Firefox developers are pursuing the
problem and trying to protect Firefox users. There is useful info there
even if you're not a Firefox user.
You will find that the latest version of Java is Version 7, Update 11.
Oracle claims the security exposure has been closed. Security
researchers say; No, what was fixed is just one example of many similar
problems. The security problems are so extensive some say that a
complete fix for Java may be two years away.
Advice: Upgrade to v7 u11
<http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp>
and then disable it in the Java control panel. Disabling it just in the
browser is said to be ineffective for IE. If you aren't currently
running this version you should first uninstall all older versions of
Java before doing the update. At least in Windows, it turns out older
versions of Java have different installation folders, and different
control panels and can also mask the installation of a newer version.
This is Windows advice. I don't know the specifics for Apple but all
browsers of all religious persuasions that run Java are vulnerable to
the Java hole.
