Had the chance, when in Edinburgh Airport departing for Nice, to handle
the OMD, the NEX7 and a few other cameras from Sony, Nikon and Canon.
The Nikons still feel fat for my hands and, though light, they are
pretty big machines. They had an 800 and a 600 there, but I don't think
I could live with either. Maybe, if I really tried.
The Canon 7D was nice, seemed to handle quite well, and was quick to
focus, as was the Nikon. I could probably live with it. No IBIS, which I
rather like.
I didn't like the NEX. My hands were all over the place, I couldn't get
to grips with it (literally!) at all. It seemed to snap into focus
pretty fast and I could carry it on a loop on a little finger, but, No.
I really like the OMD, it was a nice camera to handle, focusing was fast
and accurate, nice weight, view through the EVF was like my VF2 on the
XZ1. I like the VF2.
But then I picked up a couple of Sony Alphas. Nice cameras. Good
handling. Good weight. And the viewfinders knocked the OMD's into a
cocked hat, even the A37, which I think has the same resolution VF? What
are Sony doing with those? I like optical finders, but I don't really
think I'd miss one if I had a Sony.
I didn't have a lot of time, and wanted to handle as much as possible
while I had the chance, so it's just a quick impression. Maybe the OMD
could be adjusted to look as good as the Sony finders?
I couldn't fault the Sonys on handling or viewfinder. Which I find
exciting and also, oddly, sad. I normally don't buy Sony stuff because
they re-invent every connection and make everything proprietorial. But I
really leaned towards their cameras.
Hmm. Hope somebody finds these impressions useful.
