I'm guessing it's a Question Mark butterfly. There are also four species of
Commas in Michigan; all these are named for a silvery mark on the underside of
the hind wing, which looks like, well, a comma or a question mark. In Joel's
photo, there's an obvious "tail" on the rear margin of the hind wing--this
indicates his butterfly is a Question Mark. But species identification aside,
what makes the photo is the dramatic shadow! Wow! Even the shadows of the
antennae are visible on the gray weathered wood.
Joel, if I ever write a butterfly book, I might just ask you to let me use that
photo--it's a beauty!
