I'm not absolutely certain, but INTERPRET suspect it's something to do with
matching engine rpm and power to a 2-bladed prop without resorting to the
extra weight and complexity of a reduction gear. The net result being that
the prop has to be of such a diameter that the tips get supersonic at
optimal rpm.
I wonder if anyone's ever tried putting a smaller diameter 3-bladed prop on
one.
