As a city editor, I used to call this "The Blowhard Effect." It's caused when
someone writing a piece bends reality to fit perception in order to make a
point, or illustrate a principle, or some such as that. Usually, they don't
mean to write really wrong stuff. It just comes out that way. Happens to the
best of us.
