Check out some time the construction of The National Road - from Cumberland MD
to Vandalia IL in the 2+ decades before these canals were constructed - a wide
macadam highway with deep roadbed and effort made to keep the grade within
reason for large draught horse and ox drawn wagons - not just a narrow dirt
trail - also cleared, dug and laid by hand. Most of the original road is now US
40 and Alt US 40.
