I agree, in general. It doesn't work for me as presented. The coverage problem
in close quarters is one reason I've
almost always got 24 mm eq. available.
Still, I'm not sure that capturing the whole plaque would be a good solution.
The strong elements of the shelves cry out
for a fairly horizontal composition. Including the plaque while keeping the
window out would make a squarish
composition. Assuming there's nothing but the plaque in the bottom, it would be
dull down there.
One solution is simply to whack the top of the plaque out of the image. There's
also a B&W I rather like in there.

I also sharpened up the lantern a little and the hanging onions a bit more.
Sorta sloppy working with such a small
image, but I hope gives an idea of what Chuck would like. I'd like to think I
would have taken a second shot focused
closer to drop in an in focus group. I actually do remember sometimes. :-)
