Simply clone to a larger drive.  The primary use of cloning software is 
not to produce a backup drive as I do but to increase the size of the 
drive.  I haven't bought a retail packaged drive in a long time but they 
all used to come with cloning software exactly for that purpose.  Some, 
however, would refuse to run unless the target drive was their own 
brand.  That's why I use Acronis.

Your comment about insisting on "wiping" the source drive is something 
I've never experienced.  I have no idea why that should be true.
