You are correct, Chris. All it takes to remind me of this is to look at a
recent VFR Sectional Chart. There are several times as many restricted
areas and controlled areas of airspace as there were in the southeastern USA
when I was actively flying. Most of my acquaintances who fly frequently
have IFR ratings and file flight plans just to let the controllers keep them
out of trouble. The flights that I track in the Southeast are often given
more or less direct routes, but in some locations, such as near Atlanta,
they are routed along the Alabama-Georgia line until south of the city,
before being allowed to proceed to destinations in Florida. I recall flying
VFR over the city of Atlanta enroute to Florida in the 1950s and 1960s.
Oh, for the good old days.................
