New Mexico? There are a series of 'sky islands' from south central to SE
Arizona. They do continue on into NM, but get
smaller and drier, and thus have less wildlife.
These are small, No-So ranges that migrating birds use as part of their routes,
so they tend to concentrate the flow
into narrow corridors.
I spent a couple of days in the Chiricahuas, in Ariz. on the NM border, and
nearby areas seeing all sorts of exotic
hummingbirds.
