As I mentioned in a previous post I use the gps to track on the USGS
topo maps to which I have a more up-to-date road overlay. Some of those
topos are pretty old. I double check this with a BLM map which are
pretty good. At least the gps can confirm location relative to physical
features. They haven't changed. The problem is that in dry weather a
road may be a good 35mph road but nearly impassible after a thunder
storm. Chains may or may not help if just slick surface mud. Actually
the roads may be best when frozen and with a bit of snow.
Of course a cell phone is worthless which is why the resqlink. I don't
even get a signal at my house let alone out in the desert.
