There's no end of people who think that having a GPS will guarantee that
they will never be lost. I have one, but rarely use it. USFS requires that
I use one for establishing erosion and fire recovery photopoints. I spent
more than two years pinning down earlier photopoints where all we had was a
crude map and a few photos, some of them pretty poor. Myself, it's map
first, compass second, GPS last.
