Ah! You are assuming that they DIDN'T already do the R&D on it. This
wasn't an engineering decision, but strictly a marketing issue. Case
in point is the 100mm macro in 4/3 mount. R&D was done years ago on
it. But the decision to service 4/3-system users was the same as for
OM-system users. "We moved on, so should our customers."
R&D for an adaptor, such as this, is pretty minor. Most of the costs
are already sunk. This isn't rocket-science stuff, but minor things to
a company like Olympus which specializes in small-scale
electro-mechanical devices.
