Various comments have been made about Verizon offerings in the USA and
related matters.
Re Chris Barkers comment about the price, I agree it looks expensive
but in the UK I pay GBP3 monthly for a 100MB from o2 on a pay as you go
package.
I have my phone set up so that it tracks e-mail to my Googlemail
account but does not download unless requested specifically, and then
it leaves the message on Gmail servers so that I can archive it on my
home computer. This is useful when I am away from home without other
computer access. And I can send e-mails if required/desired. With my
latest smartphone I can browse the web if I want and take care to limit
downloads, and bearing in mind the small screen.
As far as the camera's photographic capacity, I am still using film in
my OM2SP and do not carry that everywhere so the ability to take a
photograph for the record can be useful, and sometimes I use it as well
as the OM2SP as I can easily transfer quickly on to my computer before
the film is developed. Using bluetooth or a USB connection and the
appropriate software for the phone and the latest pictures download
automatically.
I have found a new use for the data facility lately since I bought a
cellphone/mobile using android software and having a GPS. In the UK and
some other areas, for a predetermined price I can download detailed
maps onto the phone using the App. from Viewranger.com and use these
when out walking in the countryside - other scales are available. These
can be downloaded at home using my wireless router, or topped up when
outdoors at higher cost. But, one is not on-line when using the maps
with the GPS which reduces data transfers away from home/office. It
does drain the phone battery fairly quickly though. The app. seems to
be particularly aimed at orienteering enthusiasts.
