The 18MB is a TIFF file though. Not sure you'll get a significantly
different end result from their domestic division MPIX just as JPEG files.

Thanks for the comments.  Per my previous post I had hoped it was
compression.  Chuck says that it not it, so that relatively  easy fix is
out.
I'll at least call them.

Curiously --checked Millers site and there cut neg 35mm scans are 18MB. 
  No clue what they charge
and they  don't necessarily  do business with us peons.
