Ah, now I know the universe is in balance! :-)
I don't know if we are moving in opposite directions or if you are just six
years behind me. ;-) I moved from crop
sensor to full frame sensor almost that long ago, taking my first 5D shot May
17, 2006.
I've thoroughly enjoyed my 5D, and expect to keep using it extensively, but I'm
going to supplement it with a crop
sensor body, for several reasons:
1. When I bought the 5D, I found what I had anticipated to be true. The central
APS-C sized portion of the 5D sensor
just barely out-resolved the 300D. Now I've looked at some images from the
sensor in the 7D, 60D & 600D (T3i). As near
as I can tell, its 18 small MPs at least match, and seem to perhaps exceed, the
resolution and IQ of the 5D's 12 larger MPs.
2. I've lived without an increase in high ISO capability for a long time now.
Shooting down in a couple of hundred foot
deep canyon on a rainy day last week convinced me I really would like that.
3. I've missed the multiplier effect for teles and the DOF. (Yes, I know,
Chuck, but that's how I experience it.)
4. I have for some time wanted live view with an articulated screen for macro,
video and other such stuff. Yup, I know
there are better implementations than Canon currently manages, but I mostly
anticipate uses where that won't matter too
much - and there are other factors, like a stable of EF mount lenses and the
ability to use my OM and Nikon mount MF
lenses.
5. Although I'm not sure how much I might use it, I really like the idea of
having firsts rate video recording available.
6. The 5DII is just too darn much money, doesn't do all of the things I want
and will probably be replaced sooner than
later.
7. GAS :-)
So it appears I will be toting two cameras around Yosemite next week. I really
have no idea at this point whether I will
keep doing that, get a WA, cropped sensor zoom, hate the small sensor camera -
???
Which APS-C camera?
The 7d is a great camera, but too big/heavy, too expensive, fixed screen; might
as well get a 5DII, but for the price.
The Rebel/600D is very attractive, small, light, great IQ, but only one control
wheel, mode dial on the 'wrong' side, no
status LCD, no weather/dust sealing, and so on.
You can guess by now; a 60D is due Friday. For only $200 more than the 600D,
not too much bigger, useful added features,
better grip; it seems the best match to my needs.
